Hair Removal

Laser and Skincare MedSpa in Red Deer offers a lasting solution for unwanted hair with Laser Hair Removal. If you live with unwanted hair, you’ve probably tried some of the typical solutions, such as shaving, waxing, and electrolysis. If so, you are probably aware that:

  • Shaving is a daily nuisance
  • Waxing is painful, can cause ingrown hair growth and is only a short-term solution
  • Electrolysis is effective, but since it only treats one hair follicle at a time it’s not practical for large areas and is extremely time-consuming

Laser Hair Removal

  • Permanent: Concentrated pulses of light loosen the hair and disable the cells responsible for new hair growth.
  • Fast: Small areas, such as the underarms or upper lip, can be treated in 10 minutes or less, and even large areas, like the back or legs, can be treated in under half an hour.
  • Comfortable: Various cooling methods keep the light pulses mild and skin safe, allowing for more comfortable treatments than electrolysis and waxing.
  • Convenient: Unlike waxing, there is no need to let hair grow out between treatments. You can remain hair free all the time.

Risks Associated with Inexperience

In recent years awareness has grown about the potential dangers of having laser hair removal performed by unskilled laser technicians. The rapid increase in undertrained and inexperienced technicians offering this service in clinics across the country has led to more and more people getting seriously burned by lasers. It is vitally important to ask questions regarding the expertise of technicians at your chosen clinic and to find out about the equipment being used before getting treatment. A technician’s knowledge of skin-types and how they react to different laser settings can greatly reduce the risk of serious burns during treatments. At Laser and Skincare MedSpa a skin test is performed (in an inconspicuous area) 24 to 48 hours before treatment. This precaution adds another measure of safety to reduce risk for patients undergoing laser treatment.

About the Laser

Laser and Skincare MedSpa in Red Deer has chosen the Palomar Icon (Cynosure) Light and Laser System because it offers the most versatile, effective, and comfortable aesthetic treatments available. In addition to permanent hair reduction, laser treatment is also an effective way to remove problematic leg and facial veins, for reducing signs of sun damage and for clearing acne, rosacea, and age spots.

How does the laser work?

The Palomar Hair Removal Laser emits pulses of concentrated intense controlled beams of light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables further hair growth in the cells.

How is pulsed light different from other laser systems?

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but pulsed light uses a much larger treatment window than most lasers. By spreading light over a wider area of skin this allows for better skin coverage and quicker treatments.

What body areas can I get treated with laser hair removal?

All areas except around the eyes. The upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, chest and back can all be treated.

Are laser hair removal treatments safe?

Laser and Skincare MedSpa’s certified professionals will go over the risks and benefits of treatment with you. Laser hair removal treatments are skin-safe and comfortable. The laser hand-piece delivers its energy in one smooth, gentle pulse, to protect the skin from a sharp rise in temperature.

Are laser hair removal treatments for everyone?

There are very few restrictions regarding laser hair removal treatments although patients should discuss with their physician if laser hair removal treatments are appropriate for them.

Are laser hair removal treatments painful?

To ensure comfort your skin is cooled throughout treatment using a chilled water supply that runs through the laser hand-piece down to its tip and which remains in contact with the skin during laser hair removal. As a result, you will feel little heat from the laser pulses and experience very little discomfort.

How do laser hair removal treatments work?

Your Laser and Skincare MedSpa certified professional will move the hand-piece over your skin, where it emits pulses of light through the skin as it covers the target area. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the hand piece is being pulsed. Immediately after treatment you can expect to feel a mild tingling sensation in the treated area, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.

The treated hair will continue to appear for 7-30 days post-treatment. This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin. Not all of your hair is in an active stage of growth at any given time and so you will need more than one treatment to ensure that the laser affects the growth of all of your unwanted hair. Typically, several treatments will be necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction.
