New Attitudes and Perspective on Aging

There used to be a time when mature women were expected to cut their hair into a bob and slap on that barely seen pink nail polish to match the same color on their lips. Thank goodness those days are behind us! If you’ve been out anywhere lately, you will have noticed that girls in their teens are dying their hair trying to obtain the perfect gray coloring that only comes with experience. People have a new outlook, new attitude and new perspective on aging.

People are taking better care of themselves both on the outside and inside. More and more older adults are signing up for yoga, running classes, tennis lessons or gym memberships. They are finding they now have time to get involved in team sports and it’s not uncommon to find men and women past their 50’s playing hockey, soccer or baseball. Add to that activities such as gardening, walking the dog, and flexibility types of exercises such as yoga or Pilates and we have a new attitude and perspective on aging.

A study conducted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology tested over 5000 older adults, and the results were outstanding! The average age on the birth certificates of the participants was 68 years old, but their fitness age was 43 years young. That is a difference of 25 years! The four types of exercise that helped to achieve this outcome are aerobic, strength, balance and stretching activities. Always check with your doctor before beginning any kind of exercise program.

Diet plays an important role as well. Maintaining a leaner frame has been linked to longevity. Fewer calories are needed as we mature so making smart choices at meal and snack times can add years to your life. There are many variables involved that dictate how long you will live, but eating a nutrient-packed diet has helped to slow down the aging process.

Foods that should be included in your diet include Omega-3 rich foods such as almonds, seeds, fatty fish, and olive oil. Avocados, broccoli, cabbage, edamame, cucumbers and leafy greens are another addition to your diet. Ensuring that you are getting enough calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B are also recommended. And don’t forget the water! Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking enough water. Drinking that magically number of 8 glasses a day (48 to 64 ounces) especially during warmer months.

Mental health is an important factor that is often overlooked at all ages.  Multiple social, psychological, and biological factors determine the level of mental health of a person at any point of time in their lives. There are some care strategies that you can put into place into promoting a good mental health such as staying involved with community activities, ensuring you have a good support system, and keeping in touch with family and friends. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you feel you need it. There are programs out there to assist.

Last but certainly not least is that looking your best can help you feel your best. Aging doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing makeup or cutting all your hair off. Don’t be afraid to try a new foundation or lipstick. Who decided that eye shadow was only for younger people? Treating yourself to new skin care products or makeup can be a healthy change. And why wouldn’t you take the time out to pamper yourself to a skin resurfacing treatment or seek advice for those wrinkles around your eyes? You deserve to be spoiled, and no one can spoil you better than yourself. Book an appointment for some TLC and see the difference it can make.

Don’t Distress Over Skin Pigmentation

Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin, and special cells in your skin make this. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it can affect the production of melanin. While some skin pigmentation will affect only patches of your skin, others can affect your entire body.

There are a number of reasons that can cause discolored skin patches. They are a common problem with a number of different causes. Discolored patches develop due to a difference in melanin levels. Hyperpigmentation occurs when your body produces too much melanin, and hypopigmentation is when not enough is produced. The stimulation of melanin causes your tan but can also bring about unwanted dark patches as well. A few other examples of skin pigmentation happen in young women from taking the pill or pregnancy which can alter the hormone levels in females, which in turn can affect the melanin levels.

It is a good idea to be alert any time you notice a change in the texture or color of your skin, but know that most of the time, skin discoloration is harmless. Once you have checked in with your doctor, there are treatments available for the many people that experience these changes to their skin tone.

You will want to book an appointment to discuss the issues causing your skin discoloration with a professional to choose the best method for you. Resurfacing treatments such as microdermabrasion and laser treatment are options that can be used to successfully remove the upper layers of skin to allow for regrowth of the skin with the right amount of melanin.

Microdermabrasion is a treatment that exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells that is non-invasive. You may notice that fine lines and age spots become less visible. These treatments are considered nonaggressive and can be quite relaxing. Patients have said that microdermabrasion leaves their skin feeling softer, smoother and looking fresher.

Another treatment you may want to consider is laser treatment or Intense Pulse Light. This can even out the skin tone and often will tighten the skin, giving it a smooth appearance. The certified professionals at Laser and Skin Care Medspa use the Palomar Icon (Cynosure) Pulsed Light and Laser System. This system emits concentrated intense beams of light into the skin. The light is absorbed by the melanin or pigmentation in the skin. The damaged lesion (target area) naturally disintegrates and then visibly disappears vastly improving skin tone.

We offer a free consultation to discuss all your options with you before recommending a course of action. We understand that noticeable patches of discolored skin can cause you concern or embarrassment and we want you looking and feeling your absolute best.
